Individuals Stopping Slimming Medications Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that people who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a major medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing these medications should be cognizant of the risk of quick weight regain when the treatment ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a return to original mass within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

The team note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually have a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a sudden return of cravings.

"It was like a trigger activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," described one woman.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Interest

Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated behavioural changes.
