Conservative responses to the partial release of documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in images, while different voices lamented how extensive redactions cast former President Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable manner.
Justice Department Defends Censorship with Strong Rhetoric
Administration representatives defended the heavily censored sections with intense exaggerated language. “At no point in U.S. history has a President or the Justice Department been so open with the American people about such a sensitive law enforcement issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter outlining the censorship process.
Concerns Prompted by Redactions
While the former president's identity and likeness appear in portions of the materials, the extensive redactions prompt significant concerns about the information may be concealed behind them. A number of Republicans immediately called for greater openness.
“The public are furious and disengaging,” posted Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the censorship violate the law, and suggested that a subsequent Congress may move to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, today’s document release egregiously fails to comply with both the intent and the letter of the act,” he added.
A Faction of Conservative Figures Rally In Support of the Release
However, some rightwing commentators and Trump loyalists swung firmly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a justice department led by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes scores of pages that are completely censored, and many of the individuals shown in pictures have their faces blacked out.
But a few do not, including prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, especially, enabled certain rightwing figures to launch the offensive.
“It’s pretty rich how the political left wrongly accused Donald Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a woman that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a young woman in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Former President Campaign Issues Statement
Clinton has consistently said he was aware of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The White House hasn’t been concealing those files for an extended period only to dump them at the last minute on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“This is about protecting themselves from future revelations, or from information they’ll try and hide permanently. So they can publicize as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photos as they want, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the statement concluded.
Broader Conservative Commentary Seems Subdued
Nonetheless, broader comment on the right was relatively subdued following the release, especially when juxtaposed against the loud demands for transparency that preceded the congressional vote to enact a law requiring the documents' release.
The commentator, who recently accepted media access at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest advocates for a complete disclosure. In February, she criticized the administration broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing personalities were given hard-copy binders of materials that included little new information.
