The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
