Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a number of approach shafts providing entry to the site... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - enforced jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.

British military aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of our armed forces participating in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among numerous UK service members deployed over the holidays. This operation, to eliminate militants who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how British military are ready to step up, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

In December, the US military executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in the country, following an assault killed two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
